Does FlashView import Lightroom catalogs?

No. FlashView works on folders only — no database, no catalog, nothing to import. Ratings are stored as XMP: inside the file for JPEG, as an XMP sidecar next to the file for RAW. Readable in and out of any XMP-compatible tool (Lightroom, Bridge, Photo Mechanic, digiKam).

How are ratings stored?

As standard XMP. Inside the file for JPEGs, as an XMP sidecar next to the file for RAW. No proprietary database, nothing you can’t later get out of.

What happens after the 6-month beta lifetime?

You can download the latest build at any time — each one extends the lifetime by another 6 months. Before the beta ends, we’ll reach out in time and find a solution. Your settings and ratings are preserved regardless.

What does “not code-signed” mean for me?

Browsers and Windows show warnings because the publisher isn’t (yet) certified. Your antivirus still scans the file. Code-signing costs money — for a hobby project, a lot. If FlashView ever becomes a big success, we’ll take care of it.

RAW performance?

Canon CR3 has a dedicated fast-path and runs almost as fast as JPEG. Also supported: CR2, NEF, NRW, ARW, SR2, DNG, RAF, RW2, ORF, PEF, 3FR, FFF, SRW. For these, the embedded JPEG from the RAW is used — not the full RAW resolution. Deliberate choice: more than enough for viewing and review, and orders of magnitude faster.

Color management / ICC profiles?

FlashView works purely in sRGB — no profile conversion, no color management pipeline. Deliberate choice for speed: anyone who needs to judge color pixel-perfect needs the editor anyway. For viewing and culling it makes no difference.

Is there a cache?

Yes, a thumbnail cache — otherwise previews would have to be re-decoded every time you switch view. The cache lives locally and holds only generated thumbnails, none of your images or data. Size is shown in Settings; you can clear it there anytime.

Does FlashView replace Lightroom / Photo Mechanic?

FlashView is primarily a fast, lean, clear photo tool for Windows — for viewing. Rating comes on top and supports real workflows: culling with models, or — combined with StarRate (Nextcloud plugin) — with external reviewers too.

Is my data sent anywhere?

FlashView works purely locally. Single network call: the update check, once per day — it lets you know in a friendly way when a new version is out.

Mac / Linux?

Mac: no. Linux: doable, but far on the roadmap.

Importiert FlashView Lightroom-Kataloge?

Nein. FlashView arbeitet ausschließlich auf Ordnern — keine Datenbank, kein Katalog, nichts zu importieren. Ratings werden als XMP gespeichert: bei JPEG direkt in die Datei, bei RAW als XMP-Sidecar daneben. Lesbar aus und in jedem XMP-kompatiblen Tool (Lightroom, Bridge, Photo Mechanic, digiKam).

Was passiert nach 6 Monaten Beta-Laufzeit?

Du lädst jederzeit die aktuelle Version — jede verlängert die Laufzeit um weitere 6 Monate. Vor Ende der Beta informieren wir rechtzeitig und finden eine Lösung. Deine Einstellungen und Ratings bleiben in jedem Fall erhalten.

Was heißt „nicht code-signiert“ für mich?

Browser und Windows warnen, weil der Herausgeber (noch) nicht zertifiziert ist. Der Virenscanner prüft die Datei trotzdem. Code-Signing kostet Geld — für ein Hobby-Projekt richtig viel. Wenn FlashView mal ein Riesen-Erfolg wird, holen wir das nach.

RAW-Performance?

Canon CR3 hat einen dedizierten Fast-Path und läuft fast so schnell wie JPEG. Außerdem unterstützt: CR2, NEF, NRW, ARW, SR2, DNG, RAF, RW2, ORF, PEF, 3FR, FFF, SRW. Dabei wird das eingebettete JPEG aus der RAW-Datei verwendet — nicht die volle RAW-Auflösung. Bewusste Entscheidung: für reine Sichtung und Bildbetrachtung mehr als ausreichend, und um Welten schneller.

Farbmanagement / ICC-Profile?

FlashView arbeitet rein in sRGB — keine Profil-Konvertierung, keine Farbmanagement-Pipeline. Bewusste Entscheidung für Geschwindigkeit: wer Farbe pixelgenau beurteilen muss, braucht sowieso den Editor. Für Sichtung und Culling macht das keinen Unterschied.

Gibt es einen Cache?

Ja, einen Thumbnail-Cache — sonst müssten Vorschaubilder bei jedem Ansichts-Wechsel neu dekodiert werden. Der Cache liegt lokal und enthält nur generierte Vorschauen, keine deiner Bilder oder Daten. Größe siehst du in den Settings, dort lässt sich der Cache auch jederzeit bereinigen.

Ersetzt FlashView Lightroom / Photo Mechanic?

FlashView ist vor allem ein schnelles, schlankes, übersichtliches Foto-Tool für Windows — Bilder sichten. Die Bewertung kommt on top und ergänzt echte Workflows: Culling mit Modellen oder, im Zusammenspiel mit StarRate (Nextcloud-Plugin), auch mit externen Bewertern.

Werden meine Daten irgendwohin geschickt?

FlashView arbeitet rein lokal. Einziger Netzwerk-Call: der Update-Check, 1× am Tag — er erinnert und informiert dich freundlich, wenn eine neue Version da ist.

Mac / Linux?

Mac: nein. Linux: machbar, aber weit auf der Roadmap.

Hinter FlashView

FlashView is built by Mathias Mischler, a hobby photographer of 15 years. The idea came from testing other photo viewers for sister project StarRate — every one of them choked on large archives with recursive views. A quick prototype was already dramatically faster on day one. That was the spark for FlashView.

FlashView wird von Mathias Mischler gebaut — Hobbyfotograf seit 15 Jahren. Die Idee entstand beim Testen anderer Foto-Tools für das Schwesterprojekt StarRate: alle waren bei großen Archiven mit rekursiver Ansicht zäh. Ein schneller Prototyp war auf Anhieb um Längen flotter — das war der Startschuss für FlashView.
